How to use the Height Weight Chart tool

The height and weight chart can help you understand if you have the correct height or weight – for health reasons, not as a concept of beauty. For all medical professionals, this tool can help understand:

  • Development and growth in childhood
  • Whether you are maintaining ideal weight
  • Whether you are losing weight
  • Whether you are gaining extra weight

Usually when people go in for their regular checkups, the doctor that they go to checks their height and their weight. They then use the measurements to evaluate if a person is in the normal weight bracket according to their height, gender and age. However, it’s also important for you to consider that these tools are only necessary for an assessment. There isn’t a single number that can tell you if you’re fit or not.

How to interpret the height-weight result

The weight and height chart is meant to help you evaluate the association between these two components.

You need to correlate the ratio between these 2 parameters as given below:

  • Healthy weight: It indicates that you are within the normal range of the ratio between your height and expected weight.
  • Underweight: Your weight is less than the standard weight for your height as defined in the chart.
  • Overweight: Your weight is more than the standard weight for your height. It suggests you might be at risk of several diseases and need to adopt remedial measures to lose weight.

The applicability of these height-weight charts is more in adults as these measurements are standardized for fully grown men and women of different heights. So, in adults, these standards are less prone to variation.

These data sets are known as percentiles and the 50th percentile on every chart shows the average value for any group that you’re trying to get a value for. Any value above 50 is higher than the average, and a lesser value is lower than the average.

Other determinants to the chart

The applicability of these height-weight charts is more in adults as these measurements are standardized for fully grown men and women of different heights. So, in adults, these standards are less prone to variation. The deviation in your weight could be a natural corollary to your unhealthy diet or lifestyle.

The Body-Mass Index (BMI)

The body has to be fully grown, before the chart can be used. Using it on children can get results that are far from correct. Even if you have a very muscular body, then the chart cannot be used. If a bodybuilder were to use the chart, then it would be likely to show results as overweight or even obese. This result would not be correct and it highlights the downfall of this chart: the lack of fat percentage.

Unhealthy food habits, mental stress, and a sedentary lifestyle are the key contributors to weight gain. This, in turn, would lead to a host of diseases, the risk of which could be drastically reduced by adopting healthy measures to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight to height ratio as recommended by this chart.

The physiological and biological configurations are different in men and women. This is why; there are wide differences in their muscle mass and composition.

Men tend to have a stronger and bulkier muscle mass that adds to their weight. This is one of the factors that explains why men have more weight than women of the same height.

The heavier muscles add to their weight.

This is also why the height and weight charts are different for men and women reflecting the differences in their physiological and biological configuration.

Checking your height and matching it with your expected weight will let you ascertain how far or close you are to your ideal weight.

Head Circumference

This a chart that shows growth for children who are up to three years old. During this assessment, the healthcare professional will measure the child’s head around the widest part. The normal level of this test will always directly co-relate with the normal measurement according to their chart.

If a child’s head is unusually small, then it can show that a child has a brain that is developing slowly. On the other hand, if a head is unusually large then their head-to-body ratio might indicate that their brain has retained fluid.
